Why cleaning toys matters
Toys live in your pet's mouth, on the floor and out in the yard, collecting saliva, dirt and bacteria. Regular cleaning keeps your pet — and your home — healthier, and makes toys last longer. Aim to clean well-used toys every week or two.
How to clean by material
- Rubber & hard plastic: scrub in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, air-dry. Many are dishwasher-safe on the top rack.
- Rope toys: dampen and microwave for a minute to kill germs (make sure there are no metal or plastic parts), or run through a hot wash.
- Plush toys: machine-wash in a laundry bag on a gentle cycle with pet-safe detergent, then air-dry fully.
Skip the harsh chemicals
Strong cleaners and bleach can leave residues that aren't safe for pets to mouth. Stick to mild soap, hot water, or pet-safe cleaners, and always rinse well.
When to replace a toy
Retire a toy the moment it becomes a hazard:
- Cracks, sharp edges or splintering on hard toys.
- Exposed stuffing, loose squeakers or chewed-off parts on plush.
- Fraying rope that's coming apart strand by strand.
- A smell that won't wash out — a sign of trapped bacteria.
A safe rotation
Keep a small, clean set in use and replace worn toys promptly. It's better to have a few safe toys than a pile of damaged ones.
